Bittersweet. That is the word that comes to mind when I think about Palm Sunday. We will spend time on Sunday remembering and celebrating the joyous welcome parade offered to Jesus as he enters Jerusalem. It is as if, for a moment, the crowd sees clearly that he is their savior – as they cry out “Hosanna” which in Hebrew means “Save us!” They long for the shalom – the peace, wholeness, and well-being that Jesus demonstrates is God’s way offered to all people.
As Holy Week begins, this tone of celebration turns to shouts of anger, leaving us to ponder: why did the rejoicing turn so quickly to calls for Jesus’ arrest by the end of the week? Was it fear of change? Yes. Was it resistance to his abundant love for those outsiders without power? Yes. Was it that he claimed to be the one who God has promised? Yes, and this humble servant leader wasn’t at all what was expected of a triumphant king.
This Sunday, make time to join us in worship to rejoice with the crowd and welcome Jesus, our savior, into the city of Jerusalem for the Passover celebration. The handbells will play, our children will sing and wave palm branches, and we will shout out with joy “Hosanna! Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord.” And it may feel bittersweet for us, as we know the rest of the story.
Yours in Christ,
Rev. Amy
